China's Titanium Dioxide Supply And Demand Status In 2020

Mar 02, 2021

Titanium dioxide is an important inorganic chemical pigment. The main component is titanium dioxide. It has important applications in coatings, inks, papermaking, plastics, rubber, chemical fiber, ceramics and other industries. There are two methods for manufacturing titanium dioxide: sulfuric acid method and chlorination method. Chinese titanium dioxide factories still use sulfuric acid method as the main method.

1. Production process

The production of titanium dioxide by sulfuric acid method began in 1918. At the end of the 20th century and 1990s, European sulfuric acid method titanium dioxide factories made achievements in waste treatment and processing, and solved the environmentally unfriendly problem. At present, titanium dioxide by sulfuric acid method is not only in product quality The above is comparable to the chloride method, and the sharp titanium dioxide can be produced at a lower cost. After nearly 10 years of development, the production of titanium dioxide in mainland China has made great progress. At present, China has surpassed the United States to become the world's largest producer of titanium dioxide, and it is comparable to Europe in terms of equipment scale and production technology, and some production equipment with a higher starting point even exceeds Europe. However, compared with developed countries, there is a big gap in environmental protection, waste and secondary treatment and governance.

2. Status of supply and demand

In 2020, China's titanium dioxide industry is affected by factors such as the epidemic situation and environmental protection policies, and there is no significant expansion in production capacity; in 2020, China's titanium dioxide production capacity will be 3.845 million tons, an increase of only 45,000 tons from the 3.8 million tons in 2019.

With the increase in downstream demand for titanium dioxide, China's titanium dioxide output has continued to expand. China's titanium dioxide output has increased from 2.323 million tons in 2015 to 3.512 million tons in 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.29%.

Among them, the output of rutile type titanium dioxide was 2.856 million tons, accounting for 81.32% of the total output of titanium dioxide; the output of anatase type titanium dioxide was 538,000 tons, accounting for 15.32% of the total output of titanium dioxide; the output of non-pigment grade titanium dioxide was 60,000 Ton, accounting for 1.71% of the total output of titanium dioxide; the output of catalytic and functional material titanium dioxide was 58,000 tons, accounting for 1.65% of the total output of titanium dioxide;

From 2015 to 2020, China's apparent demand for titanium dioxide continues to increase. In 2020, China's apparent demand for titanium dioxide is 2,466,200 tons, an increase of 122,600 tons from 2019. Although China's titanium dioxide output continues to increase, the market is still in short supply.
