How much pigment does one cube of concrete need to color?

Feb 28, 2022

A typical concrete mix contains 350kg of cement per cubic metre, so a 5% pigment amount by weight of cement requires 17.5kg of pigment.

Each pigment has a color saturation point, beyond this amount, the amount of further increase, the final cement product color intensity will not be significantly different. Pigments with high tinting rates can reach the saturation point of the color with very little dosage.

For example, iron oxide black has the highest tinting strength, and it is generally used in cement at 6% to reach the saturation point. The tinting strength of iron oxide brown is slightly lower, and the approximate dosage is 7%, followed by iron oxide red 8% and iron yellow 9%. However, these data will vary significantly depending on the hue of each color. At present, the European standard for the use of pigments in cement products requires that the amount of pigments used in cement should be controlled within 10%, because the strength of cement products will decrease with the reduction of cement content.

Water-based paint: configure appropriate amount according to different colors. The product has good dispersibility, stable storage, good compatibility with other components in the application system, and can enhance the anti-rust and anti-ultraviolet properties of the paint.

Paint formula reference pigment amount: primer 25--30%; blending paint 20--30%; enamel 15--25% (excluding extender pigments).
